It’s that time of year again for the next F1 game, and having reviewed it for the past few years, I always wonder what Codemasters will do to further improve the series. Well, 2019 doesn’t disappoint with the addition of F2, a career mode that now features a bit of a story and improved visuals.

Gameplay is as ever spot on, no real changes here other than updated car specs for this season, though there’s a very welcome emphasis on rivals. With your career starting out in F2, you’re in a team with Lukas Weber and are thrown into a scenario where something is wrong with your car, and you’re asked to let Lukas pass. I opted to follow the team order, though I’m not sure if you do continue to block him and finish in front, whether the following cutscene plays out any different.

Speaking of which, you are having a chat with Lukas, and are interupted by Devon Butler, a bit of a big head. There’s a couple more cutscenes as you finish up the F2 season and head into F1, setting the scene for picking your rivals throughout. Sadly the cutscenes don’t make another appearance, with simple updates about what Lukas and Devon are saying to the press as you progress through the career, I enjoyed this albeit short story played out with the cutscenes and would have liked to have seen more. Maybe next year we can have a story based career option alongside a standard career?

Other modes include Grand Prix, Championships, Invitational Events and Time Trials. Moving on to Multiplayer and you’ll find the usual ranked and unranked modes, as well as the new league mode enabling players to set up their own tournaments, ideal for those racing league websites out there. Online play is smooth from what I’ve experienced so far.

There’s a plethora of options when it comes to difficulty, HUD and cameras, with the latter having the most FOV options I’ve ever seen on console. making it fully customisable for all players to get the perfect setup.

you’re able to a small amount of customisation in F1 2019 too, with pre-set liveries and the option to change the colours which is available for online cars only, and your avatar’s helmet. It would be nice to see this expanded upon in the future where you can create your own team with fully customisable liveries to take into career mode.

Moving on to the audio and visuals, the sound is glorious as ever, with everything sounding very realistic, there’s no complaints here. The updated visuals are simply outstanding, everything looks crisp, and runs at 60 fps, with reported slight dips during heavy traffic on Xbox One S. Rain and night time mist are also very, very good, making for a very immersive experience.

Codemasters simply hit it out of the park with F1 2019. I never thought that they could top last years effort and they have, simply stunning. Loads to get stuck into with the addition of F2 expanding on an already full line up. Improved visuals and loads of options to make the game fully customisable for players of all abilities. What will they do next year to top this?
