Marvel Puzzle Quest Dark Reign is developed by WayForward Technologies, Inc. and published by D3Publisher of America, Inc. The long awaited release of Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign for Xbox One users is finally over! Bringing together a mix of Marvel and Bejeweled, this game will have you hooked, and will bring you hours of fun, or in my case frustration when I could not defeat the opposing team; either way you won’t be able to put the controller down.
You are eased into the game in the beginning levels, but don’t let this fool you, as you progress levelling up your characters you soon come to realise that things can become very difficult. You start off in a team of three, with Iron Man being the main man, until you choose otherwise. You need to fight against a team of 1-3 enemies, and to do this you need to match three or more of the same colour tiles. Each one of your hero’s has an affinity for a certain colour, and when you collect enough of those colours, you unlock that characters “special attacks” for example; Storm has “Lightening Strike” which when used gives out more damage than a usual attack. This can be useful when fighting against more than one villain, or just when you are struggling and need a helping hand.
As you get further into the game you realise (like I soon did) that not the same three characters are suitable for every level, as you play against different villains, you will need to level up a number of your characters and select the best team for that level! As you gain more experience, you quickly start to unlock more of your characters special attacks! And when you finish a level, you can pick up different abilities, even ones that your enemies hold! When you finally finish a level, you are able to use the villain you were fighting against in your own team! Not only this, but you collect all of his abilities that come with him, so they are not starting from the bottom.
The game consists of 5 “maps” and each time you finish one, you unlock another, the difficulty obviously increasing along the way, and if you intend to buy this game for one of the kids, be prepared to give a helping hand as it can be challenging! But saying that, the fun gameplay and the graphics make the game enjoyable for adults and children alike, this game has something for everyone; it can be a challenging puzzle, it has your favourite Marvel characters, and even if you’re not that into puzzles, you get to fight bad guys…
