Pool Nation FX brings the world of pool to the Xbox One. billing itself as “The ultimate pool simulator. Prepare yourself for AAA pixel perfect physics, photo-realistic graphics and super detailed visuals in this truly immersive representation of the sport.”
So how does it stack up to this claim? In my opinion Pool Nation FX is the best looking game of its type, having played a fair few of them since ‘Jimmy White’s Whirlwind Snooker’ on the Amiga. Running on the Unreal Engine 4 it looks and plays stunning, with the balls behaving as you would expect in real life.
There are a few variations of pool to play, including classic 8 and 9 ball, 8 ball UK, 3 ball, straight, killer, rotation, golf, speed, killer and even snooker. As you can see there are a few things to keep you going, whether playing online or single player.
Pool Nation FX also has an Artistic pool mode in which you can build trick shots using just balls or a variety of objects so you can make them as simple or as insane as you want. Endurance is another mode which pits you against the clock, potting balls quicker than they are added to the table to keep going once the number of balls on table reach 24 it’s game over. A really addictive game mode that will keep you coming back for more.
In online mode you can play in friendlies or for PN$ (Pool Nation Dollars) where you set the amount to wager against your opponent. At the minute this is all is available for online but there is more content planned with the official word from the Pool Nation FX website reading “We have a number of planned updates coming in the first month of launch, we want to keep bringing new content to Pool Nation FX”
With Leagues, Challenges and Tournaments billed as coming soon. which should undoubtedly expand the online experience for the better. “Play against the rest of the world in our global leagues, play well to get promoted, lose and risk getting relegated! All new Challenges in game tasks and Trickshot challenges to compete against your friends online and offline. Global OnlineTournaments to earn coins online. And theres more to come!”
Which in theory should create a solid community for the game. Earlier I mentioned PN$, this is a currency earned through career and online play. It is used to unlock a variety of visual content such as ball sets, table decals and snazzy cues. A great addition which makes the game feel a little more custom I’ve even gone as far as picking my ‘lucky cue’ when playing online.
The ingame music is a little too generic in my opinion, and was switched off quite quickly. And was the only real bugbear for myself. On the whole a great title that makes the most out of this popular pub game. and with the planned continued support you cant go wrong.
