The Sexy Brutale puts players in control of Lafcadio Boone, an aging priest who finds himself stuck repeating the events of a masquerade ball at the Sexy Brutale casino. An endless masquerade ball that’s catered to your whims and fancies may sound like a good time, but there’s a shocking twist in store for the guests of the Sexy Brutale – they’re not just guests… they’re victims. Each guest is destined to die a brutally gruesome death, but Boone, armed only with the a special mask that prevents him from being detected as he travels about the mansion, has a trick in his pocket that allows him to prevent the other guests’ untimely demises.
Boone starts the game with a busted pocket watch in his possession. This watch has the ability to restart the day, sticking Boone in a Groundhog Day-esque cycle of events. Since the watch is initially busted, Boone’s first goal is to save the Reginald Sixpence, the watch maker, so that the pocket watch can be repaired. But Boone can not just go busting through the mansion to stop the murders haphazardly. While he can not be seen by the other guests or staff of the mansion due to his own mask, the curse put upon it also prevents him from being able to be in the same room as others. This puts players in a position where they are required to move about the casino stealthily. Thankfully, there are a few mechanics in place to make this easier, such as Boone’s ability to peak through keyholes so that he can witness the events occurring around him.
In order to save the victims, Boone must find a way to disrupt the events that lead to their deaths. This can be done by witnessing the events that lead up to the murder, and then discovering ways to disrupt those events. Players can restart the day (and thus the events) at any time, allowing them to retrace the murderer’s steps as many times as necessary to figure out the solution. In the case of Sixpence, Boone must find a blank to replace the bullet in a gun. Simply unloading the gun will not suffice in stopping the murder as the killer will actually check for the bullet. Replacing it with a blank, however, will disrupt the cycle of events and result in Sixpence being saved. Upon saving Sixpence, Boone can then acquire Sixpence’s skill (manipulation of clocks), as well as have his pocket watch repaired. This gives the player the ability to manipulate time from any of the clocks that can be found on the mansion’s grounds to use as save points, and the opportunity to restart the day in its entirety.
The Sexy Brutale features nine different guests, or victims as the case may be, for players to save. However, the guests are unlocked as part of the linear story. While players are free to roam the grounds of the mansion as they like, only certain victims may be saved at a time. Saving one victim unlocks the next, and also unlocks that guests’ ability for Boone to use in his exploration of the mansion. These additional abilities range from being able to manipulate clocks, as previously mentioned, to being able to eavesdrop on conversations in other rooms – giving Boone access to secret areas or information that may help him with preventing future murders. It is up to the player to use these skills wisely to unlock all the secrets that the Sexy Brutale has to offer.
The Sexy Brutale is a surprising breath of fresh air, offering a unique and creative take on the classic murder mystery while creating a point and click puzzle adventure that all comes together and feels natural and intuitive. The puzzles are, for the most part, fairly easy to figure out by anyone willing to watch and rewatch the events in order to pick out the important information. The game’s controls are simple and mostly responsive, with only a little bit of lagging between instructing Boone to open a door and the action actually occurring. All of this is wrapped up in a massive 3D mansion presented with an isometric point of view and a soundtrack that just fits the tone and ambiance of the game to a tee.
